Introducing: Yard Arms
Yard Arms from Bristol, UK. Follow them on Instagram here.
If you're a fan of melodic pop-rock anthems, Yard Arms are the band for you to check out! Last month they announced that they will be supporting Phoxjaw at Rough Trade, Bristol and we believe this band are ones to watch for the next few years. We caught up with them to find out more about them and to discuss their new EP Sanctuary Lines.
The Flipside: Introduce us to the band
Yard Arms: Billy Golding on drums and I (Noah Villeneuve) play everything else on record. Live, we have two wonderful musicians who join us on stage to help do the business.
The Flipside: When was the band formed and how did it come to be?
Yard Arms: We started Yard Arms in the summer of 2018, it was a very organic process that just came from wanting to be in a room together writing new music. This eventually developed into laying it down on record and we were so enamoured with the initial output that we felt it deserved a live outing and the rest is history.
The Flipside: How would you describe your music for someone that has never listened before?
Yard Arms: Transatlantic melancholic bops / sad pop for dad bods.
The Flipside: Which artists influence you the most?
Yard Arms: The ones that never gave up and always played by their own rules.
The Flipside: Tell us about your first releases, how were they received and what was the writing process?
Yard Arms: Our first release was called the Maiden EP, from a musical and songwriting standpoint, it was a very important record for us to make. What was being spoken about felt necessary to document and it also gave birth to a whole new part of our musical lives. It was a nice way to kick off the project, people responded to it very well, there was a resonant belief, well enough to make us realise we were probably on the right track to something.
The band released their most recent EP 'Sanctuary Lines' this year, available to listen to on Spotify here.
The Flipside: Your EP, Sanctuary Lines was released this year. How has it been received so far?
Yard Arms: Considering everything that’s going on in the world and the gravity of it all, we’re blessed that anyone gave it the time of day. We’re extremely grateful that people have been listening, sharing, streaming and talking about it in such a positive light.
The Flipside: Have you found your musical style and writing process has changed since you first started?
Yard Arms: It’s constantly adapting because I believe if an artist isn't moving forward, they’re not moving at all. We’re not pandering to trends or creating what we think people want; because it’s inauthentic. So, as uncool as we might be, at least what you’re hearing is genuine.
The Flipside: What can we expect to see in the near future from the Yard Arms camp?
Yard Arms: You’ll have to wait and see.
The Flipside: What’s your favourite gig memory?
Yard Arms: We’ve not got a large selection to choose from in this project YET. However Michael Eavis caught a set of ours at the start of the year, so that was pretty special.
The Flipside: Where is your favourite venue to play?
Yard Arms: ANYWHERE THAT’LL HAVE US, PLEASE, BOOK US, EMAIL OUR AGENT, LET’S DO THIS.
The Flipside: What’s been your nicest experience with a fan?
Yard Arms: Probably one of them becoming our manager..
Yard Arms will be playing at Rough Trade, Bristol next year. Find out more about that here.
The Flipside: What’s been your weirdest experience with a fan?
Yard Arms: A fan made a birthday cake with our faces on. It wasn’t our birthday and was probably full of poison.
The Flipside: Assuming that live shows will be able to resume next year, which festivals/venues are you planning to go to and play?
Yard Arms: Let’s hope eh. There’s plenty in the pipeline which we’ll be able to announce to you in the last quarter of this year, we’ll be covering plenty of ground.
The Flipside: Give us five (or more) artists that you think we and our readers should be checking out.
Yard Arms: Phoxjaw, Bridges, China Bears, Soot Sprite, James Humphrys, Agata, Damefrisor, Two Day Coma, October Drift, Mumble Tide, Arxx, Wasuremono, Pet Shimmers.
